Members of the Somersett Owners Association Emergency Preparedness Committee have taken the next step in the development of their committee. During the month of February, each of the committee members has participated in Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training through Washoe County.
Sixteen resident volunteers participated in a 3 day, 21 hour training course that began on February 2, 2008. The first three modules of the training include disaster preparedness, disaster psychology and search and rescue. The second four modules include CERT organization/incident command structure (ICS), documentation, fire safety and terrorism. The final modules of training include emergency medical and a disaster exercise, followed by graduation. All 16 participants graduated from the program on Saturday, February 23.
Somersett is the first neighborhood in Washoe County to have a personal CERT academy. Somersett has been very proactive in working with the appropriate agencies in the development and implementation of community response, preparedness and education. CERT is one of the best training programs offered through the Washoe County Sheriff’s Dept. It helps educate citizens about hazards that they may face in a disaster and trains them in lifesaving skills. CERT volunteers are then qualified to provide hazard response within their community, under the guidance of professional first responders. For more information visit www.washoesheriff.com.
